In service of the dying and those who love them

What Is an End of Life Doula?

hands

The experience of facing death—whether for oneself or a loved one—can feel overwhelming and isolating in a world abundant with information but lacking clear guidance for such profound moments. An end-of-life doula bridges this gap by offering personalized support, care, and understanding.

My offerings below are a good example of how I can help. If you have a need that you do not see listed, please contact me and I’ll get you connected to someone who can help.

Exploring Mortality:

  • Encouraging open conversations about death, easing fears, and helping individuals reflect on their lives and legacies.
  • Creating a safe space for individuals to process emotions, thoughts, and desires regarding their own mortality.

Day-to-Day Realities of Care:

  • Providing practical support and guidance for the day-to-day responsibilities of caring for someone nearing the end of life.
  • Helping families organize routines, manage caregiving tasks, and address emotional and physical needs.

Collaboration with Hospice & Medical Caregivers:

  • Enhancing hospice care by offering additional, personalized attention to the individual and family.
  • Focusing on comfort, dignity, and honoring the wishes of the person transitioning.

Support During the Transition:

  • Offering presence and reassurance during the transition process, helping families understand and cope with what is happening. Also known as "holding vigil," this is an important time to have an extra helper.
  • Providing emotional support to reduce fear and create a peaceful environment for the individual and their loved ones.

Grief Support:

  • Helping individuals navigate the stages of grief.
  • Providing a compassionate listening ear or actionable solutions to help manage the journey.

The role of an end-of-life doula is to guide individuals and families through the uncertainties of dying with empathy, wisdom, and care. By fostering open dialogue and providing hands-on support, I empower others to face death not with fear, but with love and acceptance.

Testimonials

“Kristin is very easy to talk to and very responsive to whatever is on my mind. From the very beginning she has been very attentive to finding out where I was with the process of dying. She is open to whatever comes up. It is so comforting to talk to someone who is so mature and interested in spirituality. Our conversations are interesting and helpful. I find her very comforting and always feel better after her visit.”

“My mother is getting so much value out of her visits with Kristin, including help with addressing the hard feelings that are coming up as she faces her mortality. I can see that she is much more at peace with her situation since spending time with Kristin. It is a great comfort to know that my mother is getting such compassionate guidance at this critical phase, and in a way that is sensitive to her own spiritual beliefs.”

"In 2023, we lost my mom after a long battle with lymphoma. During her last two years we engaged the services of in-home caregivers, which is how we met Kristin. What a godsend she has been to my family! Not only was she a wonderful companion for my mom, but she was there for all of us at the end. She gave us such loving support and in my mom’s final days she helped us understand what would happen so that even though it was so incredibly sad and difficult, it wasn’t scary because we knew what to expect in her final hours. Kristin supported us through the entire experience and beyond, even meeting us at the mortuary to help us navigate that experience. Saying goodbye to my mom was the hardest thing I’ve ever gone through and it was such an incredible blessing to have Kristin’s unwavering support and caring through it all. Her knowledge, skill, and compassion, along with her passion for helping the terminally ill and their families through the end of life process make her an invaluable resource and support in a tender time."
